About the role
This role is for engineers who want to operate at the edge of what AI makes possible while still staying deeply technical. You will own technical outcomes end to end, from understanding a business problem to designing, building, and improving the systems that solve it.
You will work in a small, senior engineering pod responsible for a meaningful area of a business. You will shape technical direction, write production code, make architectural decisions, and be the person the team relies on when the problem is unclear or difficult.
Your time will be split between building and understanding. You will spend significant time in the code, but you will also work directly with the people closest to the problem, learning how their business works, discussing tradeoffs, and ensuring what we build creates real value.
Most engineers spend their careers deepening expertise within a single product or domain. At Origami, you will develop breadth and depth across industries, systems, and AI capabilities, experiencing the range of problems that define the next generation of software.
What you bring
- Experience applying engineering fundamentals to AI systems. You understand that building with AI requires more than connecting models together. You think about evaluation, reliability, failure modes, feedback loops, and how systems improve over time.
- Comfort operating across technical and business contexts. You can work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, ask the right questions, and make decisions grounded in reality.
- High ownership mindset. You take problems from ambiguity to outcomes. You do not wait for perfectly defined tasks and are comfortable forming a point of view, making decisions, and moving work forward.
- Systems thinking. You look beyond the immediate technical problem. You understand how software interacts with people, workflows, constraints, and business outcomes.
- AI-native approach. You actively use AI tools in your own work and continuously explore how they can increase your leverage as an engineer.
- Low ego, high standards. You seek the truth over being right, ask for help when needed, give honest feedback, and hold yourself and others to a high bar.
What you’ve built
- You have shipped production software used by real people. You have taken ownership of systems beyond individual features, understanding the problem, making technical decisions, building the system, and seeing it operate in the real world.
- You have experience building across the stack. You are comfortable moving between product decisions, backend systems, infrastructure, and user-facing experiences.
- Experience building AI systems is valuable. This is especially true for systems involving retrieval, agents, evaluation, automation, or human-in-the-loop workflows. But we care more about your ability to understand problems deeply and build things that work.
Apply for this role.
Send us something real — what you have built, what you own, what you would want to own here. Expect a process that looks like the work.
